Strange happenings

QUESTION: 1! have always
tended to be a fairly
reasonable and logical
person, not putting too much
stock in anything I could not
“prove”. I am coming to see
I am too closed off from
some very interesting
phenomena and am
beginning to leek at them
with an open mind. I know I
run the risk of being thought
of as something of a kook,
but I've decided to at least
“give it a look”.

I've started to look into
telepathy, clairvoyance and
pre-cognition. But I've just
started. Do you think there's
anything important in that
sort of thing, or will | be
wasting my time? And what
is the scientific attitude
toward such phenomena?

STEWART: I would hesitate
to label as a waste of time an
exercise of “looking into”
ANYTHING with an open
and honest mind. One of the
CHOICE PRINCIPLES
reads, “choose to be
trustingly receptive to new
enlightenment whenever and
however it is revealed tc
you.” Of course, there is no
one ‘“‘scientific attitude
toward such phenomena’.
but I can say that there is a
vast body of interest and an
amazing amount of research
being done.

The term TELEPATHY

was coined by F.W.H.
Myers and was defined by
him as being “the com-
munication of impressions
from one mind to another
without the use of any of the
channels of sense”. Raynor
C. Johnson, in his book,
Nurslings of Immortality,
comments: “The evidence
for it is overwhelming; in-
deed we may say that it is as
reliably established as any
basic fact of science. But
when we ask ourselves what

we KNOW about it and
HOW IT WORKS. our
knowledge is still very
small.”

faculty for acquiring
knowledge of future events
where all processes of
rational inference are ruled
out. This phenomenon, lke
telepathy and clairvoyance,

beyond any shadow of
doubt, not only by collected
records of thoroughly
authenticated cases, but by
scientifically onmented
perimental work.

personally, rather naive in
this area of human ex-
penence, even though I am

Edna and her stepsons

QUESTION: After our
mother died two years and a
half ago me and my brother
lived with my dad just the
three of us andi last summer
when Edna moved in and
pretty soon married my dad.
My brother Kerry is 12 and I
am 14. We liked Edna at first
bat lately I don't know. She's
neat and we have fun with
her when my father is
around, but when Kerry and
me are with her alone, or
when I'm alone with her it's
like she can't see me or hear
me. She's never mean bat
when I] say something she
doesn't hear. When I repeat
it she says buh? just like she
didn't know J had spoken at
all. Kerry says she’s the same
with him. Then if my dad
joins us she's nice and happy
and everything's O.K. First I
wondered if It was because
she wasn't used to kids, but
she has two kids of ber own
who are away East at a
college. I have not met
them, but Edna showed us
their pictures and they are
nice looking, in fact quite
pretty. Kerry and I didn't
want to say anything to dad,
but perhaps we should ask
him what's up. Why is she

like that and what should we
do?

STEWART: Perhaps
because she had daughters,
she may be a bit scared of
being a new mother to two
boys, especially when they
are almost young men and
have come to her ready-
made. But that is only a
guess. We could make other
guesses, but we wouldn't
know if we were nght, would
we?

What should you do?
Well, try to make her feel at
home. Be nice to her. Try to
be thoughtful and helpful.
Gradually she might come to
see that you are nice guys
and that she can relax and
enjoy you more and more.

I think you are wise not to
say anything to your dad just
yet. Give it a real good try
first. Then, if you think you
should ask him about it, be
sure you do not try to blame
her or put her down. Tell
your dad that you need his
help because you find it hard
to understand some things
and that perhaps he can give
you a good tip or two. That is
VERY important. Don't go
griping to your dad about

-Edna because he loves her

and he loves you and he
would be put in an awkward
position, trying to be fair and
loyal to his kids and to Edna
So just ask for his help.
Often there is a ume of
juggling sew relationships
until you feel at home in
them. Be patient and be sure
you are good guys with Edna
for a little while longer
Then, if you feel you need
to, have a chat with your
dad.
