Van council urges tighter fruck controls After complaints An improvement in truck inspections by the provincial government has been urged by West Vancouver council in response to complaints by Horseshoe Bay residents regarding truck traffic in the area. Council passed a motion for the provincial govern- ment to “accelerate and improve” its heavy vehicle inspection services to ensure that large commercial vehicles are in proper operating condition. Most of the complaints from Horseshoe’ Bay residents about heavy truck traffic have centred on the dangers of mechanically unfit trucks on residential roads. Truck braking systems have been the focus of concern, Municipal Manager Terry Lester stated in a report to council. In the last year there have been a number of incidents of runaway trucks at the Horseshoe Bay ferry ter minal. West Van council will also be asking the provincial government to take extra steps to ensure that operators of such heavy vehicles are properly trained in normal and emergency operations of their vehicles. Both the municipal manager and council reyected suggestions to limit truck access within Hor- seshoe Bay or the posting of Signs stating “no access to Horseshoe Bay one this road.” Such signs would create confusion and would be neither morally or realistically acceptabie, Lester said in his report.
