efficiency expert in a large
national business. I had met
him socially a few times and
liked him. It was 10 a.m. on a
Satarday morning ~ family
day ~ as we call it when the
numbers of people, especial-
ly children, ususally out-
number the animals in the
waiting room 3 to 1. Now he
trooped into the consulting
room with his wife and two
boys fairly close in age. I
would say 11 and 12. .

“‘Good morning doctor’’
was his bright and breezy
- greeting as he introduced his
family to me. ‘‘I want to have
a consultation about getting
a suitable dog for the whole
family and I am_ quite
prepared to pay your normal
fee.’ I winced. I knew we
had to get through between
20 and 25 appointments
within the next three hours -
mainly vaccinations but all
time consuming.

The waiting room was still
full even without the
Brodericks. ‘‘Tell you what
Vil do,”’ I replied, equally
cheerfully. ‘‘You all come

back at 1:00 p.m. when I
finish appointments and we
can have a free chat for a
much longer time than I can
spare right now.” .
At the end of a hectic
morning I confronted the
Brodericks in my own office
sitting comfortably at my
desk across from the family
and enjoying a well-earned
coffee. ;

I began,‘‘Many people are
sold on one particular breed
of dog and would have no
