There are clouds in the sky, the threat of rain looms over the horizon, and [ am, as usual on a weekend day, up and out of bed before my children. These children are, to explain, teenagers now, and on weekend mornings they often sleep well into midday. I, on the other hand, am a creature of habit, with an internal alarm clock that wakes me up somewhere between 6:00 and 6:15 every morning, whether I like it or not. _It’s so quiet on these weekend mornings. I am allowed the rare freedom of Operating on my computer without rude interruptions from teenaged boys desper- ate to play some action-filled computer game. I get to write, to respond to e-mails, and to organize my desktop free from the plaintive beg- ging of a teenage daughter who lives for ICQ chat. A dog sleeps underneath my computer ‘desk, stirring only occasionally to get a lit- tle closer to my legs. A flutty white kitty is curled up on the top of my computer monitor, soaking up what heat he can from the elec tronic screen that reflects all that T write. It’s bliss, tor sure, and J revel in my soli- tude. Time rolls by, and soon it is 10:30, but still there are no stirrings from teenagers. | must get on with my day, as Sundays are busy for me, what with garbage dav being Monday, groceries to buy for the week, the column to write and various sporting events both to participatein and watch.
