MAIL Box. ing ban wouldn't work Dear Editor: Re: Story on the Lynn Canyon death of Paul Moran, June ‘Irs always terrible when a young life is fost unnecessarily, and the same of course is trac of the most recent tragedy involving 19-year-old Paul Moran. Nearly every year some similar type of incident occurs, and cach time there are renewed cries for a ban on swimming — or at least diving — in Lynn Canyon. I swam and dove in the canyon every year in my teens, and Tadmit f took a few minor risks. Lam fortunate never to have injured myself badly. The reason | took any such risks at all is the same reason young men everywhere can be found rakir risks diving, or speeding in cars, skiing or snowboarding out-of- bounds, or engaging in countless other illicit and/or dangerous pastimes. When we are young men, we are fearless and immor- tal — or at least that’s the position we take until we learn bet- Any attempt to ban swimming or diving in the canvon will be at best inctlective, and at worst 2 further enticement to leap into the unknown and the forbidden. If vou want young men fo stop raking spectacular risks, don’t tell them they can’t do it because it’s dangerous —- char’s the whole point in the first place. The only way to stop them is to replace appearing fearless with the stigma of being selfish, reck- less and stupid. One place to start might be to use the Ecology Centre to show those youth caught disobeving warnings, tapedt interviews with family and friends of the manv young prople who hve thus far lost their lives. I'm sure those people woulut have much to say on the subject, and might even feel a Gerke lexs of their own grief in attempting to prevent similar cragedies from hap- pening to others. Brian Kellett North Vancouver ter, (and hopetully live to do so). North Van support for streetcar rolling in Dear Editor: In my humble opinion, Ms. Amy Wickland’s (letter to the editor, June 16) stance as to “leave the streetcar where it is 212) a relic of the past and let’s look ahead to the future instead ...” is ludi- crous and lacks due diligence in terms of thinking the matter through thoroughly. Forestry and fishing (and mining), the bane of B.C.’s past cconomy, is being enormously challenged, as we all know. Tourism is on the verge of becoming B.C.’s (Vancouver’s) number one indus- try. Thus, the streetcar will be good for business, as both residents and tourists would be equally using it. And fase but not least, it woakd be am enormous boon to the ambience of “Lomufale” on the whole. And yes, the strectcar should be im ser- vice from May to October cach year.
