4- Sunday, November 23, 1997 — North Shore News Col Robert Galster News Reporter robert@nsnews.com DOUG Collins may have retired months ago but his work is far from over. fk Last Thursday, the 77: ° year-old scribe appeared before the B.C. Press Council in response to a complaint filed by Warren Kinsella, the Liberal. candidate = who opposed Ted White in North Vancouver during last Junc’s federal election. In addition to the two combatants, the 34-hour hearing was also ittended by White and News managing editor Timothy Renshaw. Kinscila’s complaint cen- tred around alleged inaccura- ‘cies and misleading statements contained in columns Collins wrote about Kinsclla during the last federal election cam- paign. “The issue of my com- plaint here .... Mr. Collins has a dury to ascertain the basic facts upon which his com- ments are based,” — said Kinsella. The hearing opened with Collins addressing .the com- plaint which he dismissed in no uncertain terms. “'m going to apply to the Guinness Book aad World Records to be honored as the columnist who has appeared before you the greatest num- ber of times,” said Collins. “The complaints against me, including this one, are‘ all part and parcel of a vendetta against the politically incorrect. “The same applies to that . recently ‘concluded and mis- named human rights trial. But I am proud to represent what I consider to be the real * brought complaint against Doug Collins. Canada against the Canada that has been imposed on us by politicians like Pierre Trudeau, by powerful pres- sure groups like the Canadian Jewish Congress and the politically correct media.” As the hearing progressed, both players became increas- ingly agitated, with Collins becoming progressively more curt and impatient. “I think you’re 2 hopeless case,” Collins = accused Kinsella. “I’m getting excited Mr. Chairman because of the stupidity of these questions.” Those questions were part of Kinsella’s case which focused on inaccuracies which he set out to illustrate in ainstaking detail during the caring, accusing Collins of elevating conjecture to a state- ment of fact. But Collins refuted his claims, pointing out he is an opinion writer. “He (Collins) should know you have to talk to the other guy to get the story,” said Kinsella repeatedly. Bur Collins refused to budge on the issue. Te communicate well today students seek the eading edge: Be - global idcas, . faster research and . better comprehension. White’s presence at the hearing prompted the clec- tion rivals to slip into full-on campaign mode as they start- ed to sling mud at one anoth- er, reliving the lively, if at times nasty, days leading up to the election. Kinsella brought = up White’s association with the Western “Canada Concept Party which he accused of having racist policies. White shot back by quoting an Alberta court decision which found the party did not hold racist views after cxamining the definition of racism. Kinsella further alleged Collins acted on behalf of White during the clection campaign and accused the News of being a “Reform SAVING YOU. "MONEY. > m. Toward the end of the hearing, Collins summed up his role and refused to give any ground to Kinsella ar any of the other detractors he has encountered over the vears. “TL write strong opinion, it’s true,” said Collins. “I have never been sued, successfully anyway ... | make no apolo- gies for anything I have done.” Following the conclusion of the hearing, a worn out Kinsella said he was pleased with the proceedings. “i appreciate having the opportunity to have my say whether I win or lose and I thought the council was very patient,” said Kinsella.
