Sunday, February 22, 1998 — North Shore News — 31 Research shows wine heart smart NEWS photo Terry Peters A recent study shows alcohol in moderation can improve recovery after a heart attack. Don Isaak Contributing Writer SURFIMG the Net the other day I came across a new study that gives us yet another reason to enjoy red wine on a regular, moderate basis. Research conducted at San Francisco General Hospital at the University of California at San Francisco shows that moderate alcohol consumption on a regular basis may also “pre- condition” — the heart to improve recovery and decrease damage after a heart attack. Alcohol was found to protect against “reperfu- sion injury,” thereby inerecs- ing the chance of survival. While other medical stud- ics have shown that moderate consumption of alcohol in the form of wine, beer or spirits leads to reductions in the level of coronary heart disease, the study indicates that alcohol may assist recovery even after a “heart attack.” Like aspirin, alcohol makes blood platelets less sticky, and less able to form dangerous arterial obstructions and “plague-like™ the arteries. Another way to help prevent osteoporosis is to include weight- bearing exercise like walking, tennis or jogging as a regular part of your lifestyle. Alcohol also relaxes muscles in the arteries, pre- venting further restrictions in blood How, especially at criti- cal times of phy sical exertion. In the San Francisco General Hospital study Dr. Vincent Figueredo and Dr. Masame Mivame and their colleagues published results of laboratory tests finding that “alcohol was found ta. protect against *repertu- sion injury,’ a paradoxical wors- ening of myocar- dial damage when circulation is restored to coro- nary arteries atte: prolonged ischemia. “Reperfusion injury can increase and worsen recov- ery after myocar- dial infarction (heart attack),” the researchers explained. “Research in animal mod- els demonstrates that reperti- sion injury can be reduced by preconditioning the heart.” Adenosine, a natural sub- stance produced by the body, is known to help protect the heart and play a role in ischemic preconditioning. In this new study, alcohol was found co increase levels of adenosine in the fluids sur- rounding the heart muscle and appeared to help the heart cope with a sudden drop in oxygen levels. Even when alcohol was eliminated from the dict of laboratory guinca pigs, they continued to show beneficial effects 12 to 16 hours later. That prompted — the researchers. to. speculate that “prolonged alcohol consump- tion probably caused long- lasting changes in’ cellular function and/or gene expres- sion,” Reference: Miyami M, et al.
