__________ MAIL Box north shore news Health input necessary Dear Editor: Six months ago, I would have agreed with your Aug. 3 editorial “Heaith Hooey.” Why is the North Shore Heaith Region spending so much time and money asking us “What Makes us Healthy"? After all, we all know the answer is diet, exercise and adequate funding of hospitals. Curious, I decided to listen. I found opportunities to hear speakers from the health region. I participated in their group planning sessions. I read the book Strong Medicine by Michael Rachlis, MD and Carol Kushner. I’ve learned a lot. Ive discovered: ® Prior to the Second World War, a lot of our health care focus was on public health and prevention. But with the advent of effective drugs and surgery following the Second World War, we’ve come to expect magic bullets to rescue us when we have a health crisis. @ The pendulum may be swinging the other way. In the consultation sessions I attended, people really wanted to focus on all the bits that help Keep, us healthy and out of hospitals. One friend in my hiking group commented: “We may not know each others’ last names, but we know each others’ lives,” and noted how critical this social and emotional connec- tivity is to physical and mental health. @ The pooling of many of the health resources allocated to the North Shore under one governing body allows us to look at our particular demographics and fund the responses that best fit our unique set of health issues. But why ask me, a member of the gen- eral public? Because my health is impor- tant to me! If how my health is support- ed might change, it is imperative that I have opportunities to talk; to express my concerns, fears and ideas; to explore and chailenge new concepts and old beliefs. So I thank the health region for asking! The challenge now is to ensure the health region doesn’t consult forever, but gets on with it and sses the information, and that we support them when they do. Minc is a simple idea with absolutely no cost to us dri- vers. We don’t have to buy a special spray to cover our license plates and we don’t have to go into court to fight our tickets with technicalities. Best of all, this idea will work 100% of the time, guarantee- ing that you'll never get a traf- fic ticket again. What is this marvelous secret? Put simply: obey the law when you drive. Shocking, I know. Burt believe it or not, if you don’t speed excessively, you won't get a photo radar ticket (unless there’s a_ technical error). If you don’t go through red lights, don’t fol- low too closely, don’t change lanes without signaling, and don’t drive poorly in any other way, you will never get a traffic ticket. Or, if you really want to sock it to the politicians and their cash cow: don’t drive at all. That'll teach them!
