(D refines its watershed access ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVISTS who have been pushing for more public access to the Capilano and Seymour watersheds are getting a break. By Layne Christensen Community Reperter The Greater Vancouver Regicnal District (GVRD) restricts access to the areas “to prevent contamination of the water sources,” according to a water committee report. Recently, “- public ‘access has been restricted to .GVRD-escorted bus tours. Unescorted visitors to the area are considered trespassers. But a motion put forward by Delta Mayor Beth Johnson and sup- “ported at a GVRD board of directors meeting Sepi,. 29 has expanded - access to include “groups and indi- viduals with specific, pre-determined purposes.” That would seem like good news: for organizations such as the Society policy Promoting Environmental Conservation (SPEC). The group is critical of the GVRD's logging prac- tices in the watersheds, but SPEC president Paul Hundal remains skep- tical. “{t's yet to be seen whether or not it will be implemented,” he said. Meanwhile, the GVRD approved a water committee recommendation to send a letter to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs asking for the legal power to apprehend trespassers. North Vancouver District council- lor Janice Harris, who resigned from the water committee last week, said the water committee continues to make it unnecessarily difficult for groups like SPEC to gain access to the restricted areas. “They really don’t want them in there. They see SPEC as the enemy camp.” said Harris. Hurdal maintains. that public monitoring is “absolutely necessary for the integrity of the system. “If the politicians have nothing to hide, they should be letting us in.” AFTER BREAST SURGERY ...
