lest Vancouver pays tribute to developer ‘ A TRIBUTE was paid to the ‘late West Vancouver developer Howard Martin at a recent mecting of West Varicouver District Council. WEST VANCOUVER DISTRICT COUNCIL By Maureen Curtis “¢> Martin of Martin Corporation -Lid., was responsible for some of the better housing developments in the - municipality, West Vancouver Mayor Mark Sager said. : : -- He died, December 15, at the age 1585 V MacGoivan | Avenue, North Van, of 77, after battling cancer for sev- eral years, Martin was probably the biggest individual developer of property in West Vancouver in recent: years, according to land surveyor Bill Chapman whose father has worked on projects with Martin's: father George since the 1950s, Over 100 lots in the Caulfeild area have been developed by Martin. Another 100 lots will be developed in the area. He was also earlier involved in the formation of a couple of hun- dred lots in Westmount Estates and in the financing of major water sys- tems that serviced new housing. - According to his development agent, Fred E. Russell, a popular 1950s Vancouver subdivision is an example of Martin's experimenta- tion wilh. the idea of placing build- ing foundations “where they fit.” and then drawing in the Jot lines. ‘Today, developers are increasingly limited in their building options hy bylaw restrictions, Martin disliked sham and pre- tense and refused to march to any- one else’s drum, Russell said. Chapman described Martin as “gruff, but with a heart of gold. He made sure that his lands were devel- oped in a reasonable and sensible manner,” Chapman said. Martin is survived by his wife Joanie, daugh- ters Joanne, Dale and Jane and sev- eral grandchildren. EARLY SPRING SALE BEDSPREADS Up to 30% off “Custom made” by Maxwell, J.
