Women’s centre THE NORTH Shore Women’s Centre (NSWC) has moved up in the world — exactly 15 blocks ‘north — to join forces with the North Shore Crisis Ser- vices Society (NSCSS) in the Upper Lonsdale area of North Vancouver. By Robyn Brown Contributing Writer The move, which took place in March for NSCSS and earlier this month for the wonien’s centre, allows the two organizations to work together to provide a sup- portive, empowering environment for women. “When North Shore Crisis Ser- _ Vices asked us to join them, we just loved the idea of creating a women’s building,’’ said Jen-Beth Fulton, NSWC coordinator. “For so many hundreds of years women have had to meet in basements and at-the backs of buildings, that to be here, where NSCSS have made such a beautiful space esthetically, is just so honoring of women and their needs,”* Besides, the two organizations share a lot. more than just eitn. space. “We have so much philosophy in-ccmmon,’’ said Fulton. ‘For example, Emily Murphy Transi- tion House (which is administered by NSCSS) was founded by fuun- ding.members of the North Shore - Women’s Cenire.*” Despite claims that the NSWC was more convenient as a drop-in thousand Words for News photo JEN-BETH FULTON, coor- dinator of the North Shore Women's Centre, was delighted when the organiza- tion was asked to move in with North Shore Crisis Services Society. centre when it was located near banks and shopping at 15th and Lonsdale, there are many advan- tages to its new location at 3093 Lonsdale Ave. “Although we lose centrality, now we are right at the side of the toad where buses and cars and people pass us all the time,’’ said Fulton. “We'll have our sign right out there on the sidewalk and written on the window, so we will actually be more ‘visible than we were when we were tucked away inside the building on 15th Street. “And we're on the bus routes, so we're not really inaccessible,”’ she added. Although the size of the new women's centre is no larger than its previcus location, the space ac- tualiy works much better for the NSWC's needs. There are several offices, which will be used for meeting rooms, as well as a large comfortable foyer. in Fulton's office sits a small round table instead of a desk. “Pye got it set up completely dif- ferent from the other place,’* she said, ‘‘because { think the table makes more of a feminist state- ment — that I'm equal with whoever comes in to see me."’ The NSWC will maintain its same office hours — 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays — until the end of June. Beginning next month the office will be open Monday to Thursday and closed Friday to Sunday. Members of the public interest- ed in visiting the new centre are invited to attend the Women’s Night series tonight, June 16, from 7 to 9 p.m. Tonight’s event is entitied Bady Image and Eating Disorders, and the speakers are psychotherapist Barbara Beach and eating disorder specialist Karen Ergof, For more information drop by the North Shore Women’s Centre at 3093 Lonsdale Ave. or call 984-6009.
