8 - Sunday, March 1, 1992 —- North Shore News Lawn bowling club lobbies W. Van for project funding $75,000 needed for greens upgrade THE WEST Vancouver Lawn Bowling Club wants West Vancouver District Council to come up with half of the funds for a $75,000 project to rebuild its greens at 20th Street and Marine Drive. The district has offered to pay one third. But former council member Tom Reid asked council Monday night why the 80-year- old club should be required to pay two-thirds of project’s costs. The Iawn bowling club is one of West Vancouver’s oldest sports organizations and has operated out of its current location since 1934, “The quality of the lawn has been maintained by the club for 58 years at no expense to the tax- payer. It has saved the municipali- ty well over $200,000,”’ said Reid. The club, he said, has faithfully cut the grass every other day for regular play and twice a day for tournament competition. Reid said it has also paid for the seed, top soil, fertilizers and the $5,000 mowers and other By Maureen Curtis Contributing Writer equipment needed for grounds maintenance. “We have also paid for the construction and maintenance of the clubhouse and outbuilding, including new roofs,’” Reid said. He pointed out that many other municipalities finance their lawn bowling facilities without any assistance from the clubs. West Vancouver parks director Kevin Pike stated in a memo that the $75,000 estimate seemed low. But he said staff agreed to pay one third of the cost. The grounds maintenance issue, he said, had also been given a low budget priority because this is the first year it has been submitted, Dr. Paul Pocock inc. . Staff have also raised the prior- ity of a $30,000 project to connect the clubhouse to the municipal sewer, “The sewer should not be the responsibility of the club,’’ said Reid. He added that “‘arts facilities’’ in West Vancouver appear to be favored by the municipality. Considerable funds, he said, had been proposed for the Silk Purse and the Ferry building and talk of a land swap to obtain the Odeon Theatre site. Reid’s submission was forward- ed to council’s parks, recreation and culture committee and to municipal manager Doug Allan for use in his budget deliberations. an Be our ‘Ihe VANCOUVER OPERATIC SOCIETY SINCE 1949 - 45tn PRODUCTION The Yeomen of The Guard ws Giben Music by Arthur Sullivan Poignant Mlestic Drama RICHMOND GATEWAY THEATRE WEDNESDAY a8) SATURDAY - Mar. 18, 19, 20, 21 Mar. 25, 26, 27, 28 NORTH VANCOUVER CENTENNIAL THEATRE THURSDAY TO SATURDAY Feb, 20, 21, 22 Feb. 27, 28, 29 Mar. 5, 6, 7 8:00 PM.
