Kurucz and 10 other men from the Nomads running club flew to Athens to participate in the marathon which retraces the original 26.2-mile route a Greek messenger once ran from the town of Marathon to Athens. The former director of parks and recreation in West Van- couver ran through heat and smog to register the second-place finish. More than 2,000 runners competed in a field that was divided into only an over-60 and under-60 category. Fellow Nomad and Greek marathoner Don MacKay said of the race: *‘We all completed the darn thing and survived."” However, MacKay said the group's times were slow because of the heat and hills as well as the smog the runners en- countered as they approached Athens, Other Nomads who ran in- clude Charlie Mayrs, Conway Chun, Carl Hunter, Fred Mac- Donald, Dale Matthews, Arthur Mudry, Darcy Padmoroff, Al Tone and Rob Williamson.
