Lear about composting THE GREATER Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) is open- ing a Compost Demonstration Garden in Burnaby in mid- September. The public will be able to visit the garden to learn more about composting as a method of solid waste reduction and also as a component of a healthy fruit or vegetable garden. Compost can be made from kitchen wastes, yard debris and some wood byproducts. In these days of skyrocketing interest rates and environmental awareness, an old-fashioned hob- by has become new again. Gardening is becoming part of the leisure time activities of the baby-boom generation. People are spending more time at home and aS a consequence want to enjoy Couple win home ‘“WE’LL TAKE the home,”’ said an ecstatic Lesley Austin, of Langley, upon learning she had won the 1990 Pacific National Exhibition Prize Home. The 1990 Prize Home, built by Britco Structures of Langley, has utilized brass, glass, ceramics, cedar, marble and more to create a high-tech country heritage home. The 2,300 square foot home has three bedrooms down, an airy loft, large spacious kitchen with five appliances, vaulted ceil- ings in the living room, two full bathrooms and a powder room. A corner jacuzzi and stained glass window accentuate the master bedroom ensuite. The home in- corporates many state of the art Power Smart and Quality Plus features to ensure maximum heating efficiency. The home will be relocated to 140th and 87th Avenue in Surrey’s Brookside subdivision developed by Progressive Construction. Austin, a registered nurse in a Delta doctor’s office, and her husband Tim, an inside worker at Dairyland Foods in Burnaby, can hardly wait for the move. They have been living in a basement suite since they were married a year and a half ago and look for- ward to living in a home of their own. “We're definitely moving into the home. We toured it on Satur- day and just loved it. We can stop paying rent and use the rent money to buy furniture,’’ Lesley said. The Austins purchased one $20 sheet of 17 tickets during their visit to The All-Time Good-Time Fair. GVRD opens demonstration garden their homes and gardens more. “We've definitely seen a surge in the number of people who are coming in asking about garden- ing,”’ says Mike Levenston of City Farmer — the non-profit society contracted by the GVRD to help develop the Compost Demonstra- tion Garden in Burnaby. The society also runs a garden in Vancouver, ‘‘We've always composted at the garden in Van- couver, but more of our visitors are asking about how they can do it in their own backyard these | HANDICAPPED. Now the younger generation is getting into it, realizing that the old methods were good for the overall environment, not just the gardeners,’* observes Levenston. The GVRD's Still Creek Avenue Compost Demonstration Garden will enable new gardeners to learn about composting and decide which method is best for them and their gardens. The 13 dif- ferent compost bins on display are landscaped into the design of the flower beds and vegetable plots. All except four were designed and manufactured by local en- trepreneurs.
