ele aS 10 - Sunday, December 17, 1989 - North Shore News W. Van parents, teachers want more schooi money, facilities MORE MONEY, more facilities and materials, and more specialized teacher training were the chief issues raised by parent and teacher groups in recent submissions to the West Vancouver Schoo} Board’s budget committee. Addressing a packed board room of parents and school staff, the speakers made a point of prais- ing the trustees for the progress be- ing made, especially in smaller class sizes, but emphasized that services were falling behind needs in many areas, especially in light of the demands made on_ today’s children in an increasingly complex society. Carina Ayriss of the West Van- couver Parents’ Association began the evening by telling the board that buildings and classroom ma- terials were inadequate throughout the district. ‘Sentinel Secondary is reaching the overcrowding state, West Van- couver Secondary is in desperate need of renovation, and Hillside Middle needs upgrading and renovation,’’ Ayriss said, adding that equipment in ail schools is te- ing replaced far too slowly, art materials are being subsidized by parents, and schools are depending far too often on parent group fund raising. “Our schools are not adequately equipped to prepare our children”’ for an increasingly complex and demanding world, Ayriss said. “We sent a letter to (Minister of Education) Tony Brummet and got a rough letter back essentially say- ing, ‘What the (heck) do you want us to do about this?’’’ Ayriss told the gathering. To Ayriss’s demand that day or, Personal Injury arid Experience C Dennis Quinlan Martha Konig — By PATRICK RAYNARD Contributing Writer care ‘should be provided without exorbitant cost to the school,” board chairperson Jean Ferguson responded that there is ‘tno money or space left over for day care.”’ Sandie Bradley of West Van- couver Parents for French told the trustees that they had to shoulder more financial responsibility for library collections and other learn- ing materials which ‘for years have been supplied largely by parents’’ at the three schools pro- viding French immersion: Hollyburn Elementary, Pauline Johnson Elementary ani Sentinel ndary. ‘*The kids are lining up ic use encyclopedias,’’ Bradley said. Dana Taylor of the Gifted Childrens’ Association of B.C. said that inadequate funding for the “‘legitimate special needs’’ of gifted kids could lead to them dropping out from lack of challenge. **Even suicide can be the result of inadequate help for gifted kids,’’ Taylor said. Self-esteem is also a vital quality for the success of learning disabled children, Henry Wood of the Learning Disabled Association of B.C. told the board. Self-esteem can be lost so badly that it is “‘irretrievable’’ Wood said, pointing out that “often very Our years of experience handling Injury and accident claims will help you obtain the award your case daserves, © Frea Consultation ¢ Percentage Fees Available © We will limit our percentage fees where liability is not disputed Derek Cave Dennis Quinlan Martha Konig 687-3216 Derek Cave | rergeson Gittord - Barisers & Sotciors | Bh _| Suite 500-Park Placa, 666 Bumrard Stree! & Vancouver, Canada VOC 3H3 THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF NORTH VANCOUVER NOTICE NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the following bylaw will receive 3 readings by the City Council at the special meeting to be held on December 18, 1989: “Sewer Rate Bylaw, No. 1, 1963, Amendment Bylaw, 1989, No. 6072” The above bylaw, upon adoption, and effective on January 1, 1990, will increase the rate charged to users of the City’s Sanitary System. John Luccock, president of the West Vancouver Teachers’ Association, began a well-organiz- ed presentation by telling the board that they must provide enough funding to ‘tenable teach- ers to enable learners’’ to reach the targets set out in the Year 2000 document of the Sullivan Commis- sion Report. The WVTA, Luccock said, recommends that class sizes be “significantly”? reduced; that the school budgets for supplies and equipment be doubled; and that adequate funding be assured for professional development, im- provements in libraries, counsell- ing, clerical services and a ‘‘fair competitive salary package in- crease for professional staff.”’ Needs in each of these areas were explained in detail by Jane Cowan, Beth Dye, Pat Bronson, Kathy Grant, Audrey Campbell and Dale Lundstrom.
