DISCUSSION PAPER RELEASED Future of education A DISCUSSION paper recently released by the Ministry of Educa- tion outlines some major changes in curriculum and assessment within the school system, North Vancouver assistant school super- intendent Chris Kelly told the North Vancouver District 44 School Board during his pres- entation of “Year 2000: Cur- riculum and Assessment Framework for the Future’’ at the Sept. 25 board meeting. - “*It suggests some of the changes that are coming this way and could be an impetus for getting ready for them,” Kelly said. In addition to the much publicized ungraded primary system for kindergarten to Grade 3 students, there will be a new learner-based program for students up to Grade 10. The final two years of high school will be made up of a dif- ferentiated graduation program @ividing the students into tive gtoups — all of which will go through some sort of work experi- ence. Bridge work quality slammed AT LEAST one North Vancouver man is furious about the quality of the repaving work recently com- pleted on the Lions Gate Bridge. By PEGGY TRENDE:L-WHITTAKER News Reporter “If they call that a resurfacing job, it’s a disgrace,’ said George Hinton, a pensioner who says he regularly uses the bridge. ‘It’s worse now, it’s bumpier.”’ Surinder Sahota, the Ministry of Transportation and Highways manager for the project, said, ‘‘I have heard about complaints about the work being done rough. “I would have to reluctantly agree with that.” Although Sahota admits that the work is not ideal, he said, “‘ 1 am convinced (the contractor) has done what he was obligated to lo.”” “As a manager, J cannot blame it on the contractor,”’ he said, ad- ding that the main difficuity with the project was that the asphalt had to be spread manually. Because the job required that two bridge lanes be kept open at all times, the use cf a machine paver was ruied out because it would have been too wide to fit in- to one lane. But in the future, Sahota said he definitely plans to use a paver to ensure a smoother resurfacing. While this might mean the inter- mittent closure of the Lions Gate Bridge, he said the work could be done at night. He added that commuters shouldn’t have expected a com- plete repaving job because the in- tention of the project was to bring the worst areas of the road up to standard. As it stands, however, he is seeking second opinions within the ministry as to how to improve the current condition of the road sur- ‘ace, But he could not say whether more road work will be done on ’ the bridge in the near future or put off until another year.
