The win sends the pair to the Western Canadian figure skating championships in New Westminster next month. If suc- cessful there, they will have a chance to compete for the national charmpionship figure skating title in Quebec in February. Barnes and Williams are cousins who have skated together for the past eight years and have plenty of medals to show for it. For the last five years the pair have skated at the Canadian na- tional figure skating champion- ships as novice and junior com- petitors. The routine that won them a new title in Richmond — a short 2% minute program and a longer 4 minute routine set to Romanian music — was the most challenging performance they have given in their eight years together. “It was the hardest routine we've done yet,’’ said Barnes. ‘‘It was intricate and involved a lot of footwork. You don’t usually see that in pairs.”" Figure skater Tanya Bingert, TRE 980-9211 OUT Sp : S Lynn Tate) Ceitrre —— 3 980-0116 By EVELYN JACOB News Reporter also of the NSWC, won the senior women’s title. Barnes and Williams work with Vancouver choreographer John Thomas. Williams, #8, studies Grade 12 by correspondence and Barnes, 17, attends a special program for athletes at Sentinel School in West Vancouver. The program, initiated by a former Sentinel principal named Doug Player, allows students to take advantage of a _ half-day timetable. About 10 per cent of Sentinel’s students are enrolled in the pro- gram including super-achieving skiers, skaters, gymmasts, swim- mers and tennis players. And to those who would call working out daily with a family member unusual, Barnes has her own explanation: ‘‘Skating with your cousin is original. It makes us like brother and sister.”’
