MaILBox DEATH OF WHALE Reader slams Hunter on aquariu OPEN LETTER TO BOB HUNTER I feel compelled to write you with regard to your column in the Dec. 21, 1988 edition of the North Shore News. The loss of the baby Orca recently at the aquarium was felt by all who have any compassion at all. Your article, however, in my opinion does nothing to or for the whales except to make you look like a fool and to slander a knowledgeable, dedicated group of in- dividuals who make their work the study and better- ment of these remarkable animals. I am a commercial fisherman who spends a great deal of time each year at sea where I am privileged to see first-hand several species of these creatures. I never cease to be amazed at how graceful and power- ful these whales are and how little we know about them. The knowledge that has been amassed, on killer whales particularly, can only be obtained by study in an aquarium-type environment. The fact that some of the large expenses incurred are offset by the public's Kenneth J. The peaple who are involved are professionals and deserve to be paid in accordance with their education and abilities. Your inference that they are only inter- ested in money is tripe, as a far greater injustice has been committed if you received any remuneration for the garbage in your article. This is the first time 1 have been moved to write in response to an article | have read. The people at zoos and aquariums are probably the last line of defence for animals which are near extinction and I believe that you owe the people at the aquarium an apology and retraction. It is irresponsible journalism such as you have writ- ten about the whales and the aquarium that does more harm to the animals than the captive environment they are in; you really should be ashamed.
