10 - Friday, January 27, 1989 - North Shore News Respected WV teacher passes away at age 77 Helen Ireue Barr WEST VANCOUVER lost a much-loved and respected teacher recently when Helen Irene Barr died Jan. 15. She was 77. Miss Barr taught English and commercial subjects in her 34-year career at West Vancouver Second- ary School and became head of the school's English department before retiring in 1977. Former fellow teacher Mary Yurich said Miss Barr’s influence on her students was dramatic. “‘T have taught for 32 years and I knew a lot of teachers,’ Yurich said, ‘“‘but she was the person who had the most friends of ex-students I knew.”’ Miss Barr was honored with the Queen's Jubilee Medal in 1977 for her contribution to education in West Vancouver. By MAUREEN CURTIS Contributing Writer In making the decision, council thanked the members of the com- mittee for their efforts over the past couple of years, culminating in the 1987 report on the Ambleside-By-The-Sea concept and the development of the foot of 14th street. Considerable work was done in 1988, including beach improve- ments, completion of a public square, fountain, new rock groyne and boat ramp, and plans are under way for 1989 to build a fish- ing pier this summer. On calling for the disbandment of the committee, Ald, Mark Sager added that this might be a good time to take the advice of Ald. Rod Day and shift more attention to the lands above the Upper Levels Highway. Sager advised referring the idea of creating such an Upper Leveis committee to Mayor Don Lan- skail, on his return to West Van- couver. Day said a consultant should be hired by the district to look at development of the lands above the highway. “There’s a lot of land up there and we should make sure that it is developed intelligently,” said Day. The members of the Ambleside Waterfront Committee were: Chairman Martin Ray, Sharon Former West Vancouver Sec- ondary School principal Bernie Holt said Miss Barr was *‘beyond a doubt a first class teacher...on a scale of 10, a 9.5 or a 10." Holt said her establishment of an executive club at the school to cultivate and encourage school leaders was another important contribution to West Vancouver Senior Secondary and its students. In her retirement, Miss Barr chronicled the development of education in West Vancouver with her book, Early Education In West Vancouver — The First 70 Years — 1911 to 1981, and was extremely active in the West Vancouver and North Shore community.
