Herpes book gives disturbing WHAT DO herpes, poverty and waterfowl have in common? Good question. Thankfully the answer is ‘absolutely nothing’ — apart from inclusion in this week’s BOOKS NOW column. Flippancy aside, all three of the books we will be looking at do have a legitimate common factor as each excels in its particular field. Two of these books qualify as recommended reading for everyone, while the last of the trio may appeal to a somewhat nar- rower audience. The Truth About Herpes (Gor- don Soules Book Publishers; 216 pp.; $14.95 in paperback) is perhaps one of the most disturbing yet essential works to have crossed this reviewer’s desk in a very long time. MIKE STEELE book reviewer Disturbing because the informa- tion about this disease (or group of telated diseases) is astounding in its implications for North Americans; essential for the simple reason that, despite our preoc- cupation with the better-publicized threat of AIDS, herpes is more widespread, entails consequences not generally known and is quite incurable. The subject matter may not be the kind of thing that crops up asa frequent topic of conversation around the barbecue pit, but the horrifying facts of herpes demand our attention. . As already stated, we (society in general and the media in par- ticular) are more than a bit preoc- DENTAL HEALTH S YOU CAN CANADIAN DENTAL ASSOCIATION insights cupied with the AIDS menace; this despite the prevalence of genital herpes and the alarrning number of new cases believed to occur an- nually: 500,000 to 1,000,000 throughout North America. While we may fear AIDS (and rightly so), the simple fact of the matter is that we all stand a far greater chance of contracting herpes than AIDS. While this lat- ter affliction mav ultimately result in death, living with herpes is, as The Truth About Herpes graphi- cally attests, something none of us would wish to experience. The author of this book definitely knows his material. Dr. Stephen L. Sacks is an associate professor of medicine at the Uni- versity of British Columbia and the. founder of the UBC Herpes Clinic. He drew on his experience with over 3,000 herpes sufferers in compiling The Truth About Herpes and the reaction to his book surprised both him and his publisher. Within weeks of its release the good doctor was a guest ona major U.S. television pro- gram and The Truth About Herpes rapidly sold out its first printing. Those of us who don’t have herpes can count our blessings, but should still read this book — just to know what it is we're trying (or should be trying) to avoid. Those afflicted with the disease will be thankful for the release of an authoritative and highly read- able work that explores all facets of herpes and the possible com- plications of living with this ail- ment. Anyone with a family member, friend or lover suffering from herpes will be grateful for the ex- haustive attention to detail that Sacks has brought to this work.
