f4- Sunday, February f4, 1988 - SOME NEWS about prestigious appointments and changes in the manner of making them: all of it disturbing to those who long ago learned this important lesson: you think things are bad now? You will discover how much worse they are, after you've finished im- proving them. Nominations have already been received in Oslo for the 1988 Nobel Peace Prize. Soviet leader Gor- bachev and President Reagan have both been nominated. Sources say that President Cor- azon Aquino, Pope John Paul, abducted church envoy Terry Waite, President Kurt Waldheim, Prime Miniser Rajiv Gandhi and jailed South African civil-rights leader Nelson Mandela have also been nominated. I do not know the people who constitute the final selection board, committee, or whatever. In fact, I North Shere News do not want to know who they are: | am suspicious of them already; and learning who they are would just confirm it. From watching them at work over the years a certain pattern emerges: First, they resolutely avoid awarding the Peace Prize to anyone who clearly, manifestly is a real, working peace-keeper. The prize has never becn (and never will be} awarded to a police con- stable, a saloon or club bouncer, a mother of eight young children, or the inventors of the atom and nu- clear bombs, whose inventions have kept the world peace, and fit a fire under the wish for it, better than anybody’s. Second, there always seems to be a little political or ideological angle behind the giving of the award. Nothing wrong, of course, with an outfit carrying out its objects by choosing worthy recipients. That, in itself, isn’t an angle. It’s only when they hand out the Peace Prize to the oleaginous, slippery, transparent pitchmen Present this coupon when you make your 1987 or 1988 RRSP contribution toa 1-5 year GIC- ‘RRSP at First City Trust and you'll earn a 4% BONUS above our posted rate.* And this '4% BONUS applies over the entire term! He deplores the actions of white South Africans in fine, ringing, polished style: but it is only when he gets to the part of the speech in which he pretends to deplore inevitable oceans of hate and rivers of blood to be visited upon the whites, that the speech comes alive. You can see in his visage signs indicating the pure enjoyment of the coming mayhem, while all the while deploring it. Tutu preaches peace; but it seems plain enough he is up to mischicf. It also seems plain enough the Nobel people who gave him the Peace Prize were not so much the current World Champion Peacemaker, as giving him a much-needed media boost in his constant championing of the bloody-minded, murder-by- necklacing leaders of the African National Congress. It would be just as well to keep an eye on this Nobel outfit. Another one you might keep your cye on is Jan Scott, At- torney-General of Ontario. Mr. Scott recently and very publicly expressed the view that he is far from satisfied with the man- ner in which judges are chosen and appointed.
