At age 24 she has already been crowned Miss Isreal, competed in the Miss World Pageant, been an actress on numerous television com- mercials and has built up, with her husband Ron, one of the most successful fitness enterprises in Vancouver with exercise centres in North Vancouver and Kit- silano. While success has come early for Dana, her toned figure and good looks have been tempered by years of exposure to a simmering Mid-East war and shoulder brushing with success in Israel and East Africa. In her youth Dana piled sandbags around her house and was regularly forced to hide in bomb shelters in a country that ‘‘was just one big problem."’ “But it mever entered anyones mind to give up,” Dana said. “If we gave up there would be no Israel.’’ One of Dana’s childhood buddys was the son of Kenya’s Prime Minister Jomo Kenyatta, when her father was an agricultural advisor to that country. SUCCESS-ORIENTED .“‘Pve always been at- tracted to success,’’ says Dana. “I’ve always admired success in anybody. My background is very impor- tant to what [ am.” Her determination to suc- ceed coupled with a keen in- terest in finance — which prompted her as a child of six to advise her parents’ friends on investment strate- gy — a flare for color and love of fitness have made her one of the youngest suc- cessful business women in Vancouver. “IT set goals and don’t back off,”’ said Dana. While Dana teaches the Ron Zalko workout, she leaves the excersise development field largely to husband Ron, an_ intense man, driven to the fitness field by a youthful weight problem. Dana compliments Ron’s efforts in designing the best workout with designing the best facility right down to the chrome finish on the weight machines and the color of the changing rooms. GOOD ATMOSPHERE It’s the atmosphere as well as the results from the fitness program that keep customers coming back, says Dana who also does the advertising including putting herself in most of their pro- motion pictures. The Zalko’s make a distinction between the North Shore and Kitsilano fitness markets, saying that fitness on the North Shore is more family and health oriented while members of their Vancouver location are more interested in looking good. While Ron teaches the in- structors the workout routine, Dana teaches them how to move and dress. Despite her drive to suc- ceed in business and her desire to “put the whole world in shape,” Dana has a surprisingly relaxed attitude toward exercise. “Pm not a fitness guru like Ron,’’ Dana says. She does work out five times a week, but says she’s not greedy about getting results from her exercise. “Pm not extreme about workouts, because I’m going to be doing it forever. 1 want to enjoy it.” And while she eats healthy foods, Dana’s not beyond a homemade cookie, a cup of coffee or a glass of wine.
