Two local bands will be featured as well as two acts from Vancouver and Seattle. Run is a three-man powerhouse with roots that go back a long time on the North Shore. Two of the band’s members, Brad Hamblet and John Wightman, were born and bred here, while bass guitarist Geoff Hall comes from Winnipes- ” “Recent club music is 50 synthesized that it loses its hurnan _ quality.’’ Although Run has been on the club circuit for the past three years, this wil! be the bands premiere gig at . Whispers. Guitarist and lead vocalist rad Hamblet promises no head-banging sounds. Although influenced by the saw rock-style of the early *710s,. Run adds a new elec- tronic twist to its music. FUNKY ROCK “A lot of the recent club music is so synthesized that it loses its human quality,”’ Hamblet says. ‘“We use as many electronic gimmicks as we can, but it’s for fun — it’s human."’ Besides playing the com- pulsory top 40, Run tries to fit in as much original music as it can, According to Hamblet, the group’s sound can be compared to an April Wine of the 80s. “Of course, we like to keep people guessing,” Hamblet says. ‘‘Some of our songs like ‘Follow Me’ are | By DEAN CUMMER funky rock and roll like Fixx, and others like ‘Once a Fire’ are quasi- heavy metal.*’ LIKES PARODY The band sharing the stage with Run is one of the most popular original pop bands in Seattle. Mfondo Vita mixes rock music with comedy that is strong in parody. The humor is within a strong musical context, em- phasizing solid musicianship and danceable rhythms. The group parodies everyone from Ronald Reagan to Lucille Ball. The band has opened for Adam Ant twice as well as for The Flirts, The Catholic Girls, and Spinal Tap. WON CONTEST M.T. Vessel is a new band, but one that’s gaining rec- Ognition fast. The band got its start at Spotlight 85, a combination talent showcase and old-fashioned battle of the bands, which it won March 6. Known for its unpredic- table vocal arrangements, and fluid rhythm section, M. T. Vessel will bring a wel- come change of pace to the North Shore club scene. The ether band booked for next week’s line-up is no stranger to the local scene. Local band Los Durangos continues to rock on the North Shore. M. T.
