THE CANADIAN residential housing market is
expected to experience a seven per cent increase in
sales and a six per cent rise in prices in 1985, a
moderate improvement over 1983 and 1984 fig-
ures, according to the most recent forecast releas-

ed by Royal LePage.

The latest forecast calls
for slightly higher sales this
year than the Royal LePage
estimate in a previous
forecast released prior to the
end of 1984.

“We anticipate the hous-
ing market will continue its
relatively stable pattera
throughout most of i985,**
said George Cormack,
President, Royal LePage
Residential Real. Estate Ser-
vices. ‘‘However the per-
centage increases in sales and
prices will vary in different
areas of the country."”

For instance, the number
of homes expected to be sold
in Vancouver and Edmonton
is forecast to rise as much as
10 per cent, while sales in
Regina and Halifax will only
experience a marginal in-
crease of about three per
cent.

higher by the end of the
year, while a more moderate
increase of two per cent is
expected in Ottawa.

“A number of positive
factors support the predicted
increase in resale home buy-
ing,’’ said Cormack. ‘‘Inter-
rates have dropped
steadily since last summer
and appear poised to remain
at relatively affordable levels
for most of 1985, Recent

the inflation rate should

crease in housing prices ex-
pected to be manageable in
most areas, we feel con-
sumers will be encouraged to
buy homes.”’

“We predict the average
price of a home will increase
to more than $81,000 from
the 1984 level of just over
$77,000."
