~ AN OVERFLOW crowd at North Vancouver-: _ District Council Chambers Monday witnessed an~- emotional plea by the Silver Harbor Manor Society’ for a joint donation of $80,000 from the District-” WEP ERAT TS STE TT Ee ee See _and-City.of North Vancouver. _ Bill Sorenson, a director of the Society, told District Council that no other com- — munity in B.C. does ‘‘so little for seniors.”’ He made extensive com- parisons between Silver Har- bor and West Vancouver’s Seniors’ Activity Centre ad- ding that the municipality of West Vancouver contributed over $137,000 to its Seniors’ Centre tast year. In contrast, the 1983-84 Silver Harbor budget con- sisted of a:55 per cent provin- cial subsidy, While the re- maining 45 per cent was rais- ed by members. With the provincial government now axing its support, (which totalled - $114,500 in the fiscal year en- ding March 31, 1984) Soren- son said the Centre has now devised a 1984-85 budget totalling $196,500, with 40 per cent to come from the two municipalities and 60 per cent from the menibers. Membership fees at Silver Harbor were recently raised 300 per cent, along with in- creases in program fees and meal costs. Membership fees are now $12 a year. “Surely if the City and District can find the means to subsidize the Recreation Commission som $1,750,000 a year to provide recreation and social pro- grams for 80 per cent of the population, they can:collec-"— tively find $80,000 to sub- . sidize Silver Harbor which | caters to 20 per cent of the population,’’ said Sorenson. **An additional $80,000 added to the City and District tax base is peanuts compared to the total City and District budget, and the cost to in- dividual taxpayers would be less than $1 per capita, when you consider the portion of taxes paid by commercial and industrial taxpayers.”’ Following Sorenson’s presentation, Council voted to strike a committee which ; would meet with a City com- © mittee and representatives of Silver Harbor. According to Silver Har- bor statistics, 31 per cent of | the regular users of the facili- ty are District residents, while 60 per cent are City residents. Current research shows that : 16 per cent of the North Van- couver District population were over 55 by 1991 and 30 per cent by the year 2000.
