Concerns over increased traffic in an already con- gested area and residents’ fear that the combined gas Station and convenience store would have led to an increase in noise in the area were ex- 7,.pressed during a public hear- -ing into the application and council debate that followed. Mayor Derrick Humphreys led opposition to the pro- posal with a 600-word prepared statement. ‘‘Lam advised by the (West Van) Police Department that a development such as the ap- plication before us would materially increase the polic- ing patrols and needs in that area,’’ Humphreys said. He added that while the proposal by Chevron Canada was based on a desire to meet changing needs, he had heard little to support that argument. Earlier, residents had ex- pressed fears of increased by MARK O’RIELL noise from the site — at 16th and Marine Drive — and in- creased litter in the area. They had also reminded council of two recent armed robberies in the vicinity where the targets were gas stations. As it became evident that the proposal would be defeated, Ald. David Finlay urged council to consider for- ming a policy of 24-hour openings. Humphreys said council members would be hearmg something on the subject soon. Fred Moore, a represen- tative of Chevron, said after the meeting he was disap- pointed the planned gas sta- tion won't be going ahead. Asked what the company would do with the location, he said they would be taking another look at their proposal.
