A7 - Wednesday, December 14, 1983 - North Shore News Gi mailbox Mietric is not ‘Nazi’ Dear Editor It is understandable that those among us who have grown up with the imperial measurement system have their problems converting to the metric system. The federal government gave those people considerable consideration by making the inevitable transition as easy and gradual as possible and stretching it over a_ long period of time. 1 can also understand the criticism in this matter, especially by Anglo- Canadians, as expressed in Bob Hunter’s ‘‘Never give 2.54 cm’’ article. However, | fail to understand why Mr. Hunter calls the metrification program ‘‘the government’s numerical nazism.’’ Does not the English language provide ample and colourful oppor- tunities enough to express scorm or cynicism when criticising the government? I, for one, can do without and take exception to show- off journalism that resorts to the vocabulary of the Ger- manv of yesterday when deal- ing with an internal Canadian matter. It does not spruce up the writing, it rather spoils it. Had the writer been aware what the word entails, he would, I am sure, not have used it in exposing an action of our democratic govern- ment, his and mine, whether he likes it or not. Eckehart J. Priebe Editor-in-Chief of the Kanada Kurier wae Pay-TV ‘party’ just starting Dear Editor ~ Pm afraid the only ones who may be ‘‘Too Late for the Party’’ could be the North Shore News. I grant that if you believe only what you read in newspaper head- lines, then the recent bankruptcy of C Channel, Star Channel and the new Westminster Columbian would indicate that Pay TV and community newspapers are doomed. Nothing could be further from the truth for either Pay TV or, I’m sure, local community newspapers. If Noel Wright had called his local cable company in- stead of reading headlines, he might have found that for a corpse, Pay TV is pretty live- ly on the North Shore, B.C. and Canada. On the North Shore our Pay TV subscribers have increased 85% since July. If every home on the North Shore receives the North Shore News, then you may be pleas- ed to know that one out of nine of these homes subscribe to Pay TV at $15.95 a month, and more are subscribing every day. Our current penetration of 12% is now higher than the national average of 10.5%. While B.C. viewers started slowly, subscriptions have increased steadily each month as the value of Pay TV became bet- draperies by S. Movies in your own home, at your convenience, in stereo sound, uninterrupted by commercials for about 50¢ a day has proven to be a rewar- ding purchase for 6,000 of our North Shore cable subscribers. In contrast to Noel Wright’s speculation, VCRs are by no means a com- petitive factor to Pay TV, in- stead they are a complimen- tary service.
