C4-Sunday News, November 9, 1980 women QUEBEC PHYSICIANS SAY Return to midwifery called unacceptable MONTREAL (UPC) - A return to midwifery is an “unacceptable regression” and would threaten dramatic improvements achieved in hospitalized childbirth over the past 20 years, the Profes- sional Corporation of Physicians of Quebec has said. Dr. Augustin Roy, president of the group repre- senting nearly 13,000 doctors across the province, said Quebec enjoyed one of the world’s highest standards of obstetric care. A drop in pre-natal deaths, he added, was the result of medical advances such as the increasing use of ultrasonic equipment to explore organs (echography), extracting amniotic fluid from a mother's womb to predict serious defects and closer monitoring of the fetus. A study, released by Roy and issued free to expectant mothers, shows that for every 1,000 new-borns weighing more than 1,000 grams between 1967-75 pre- natal mortality fell from 22.12 to 12. The figure was 41.9in 1952. Maternal mortality rates were 1,140 per 10,000 pregnant mothers in 1850, and between 1969-78 dropped from 3.7 per 10,000 women to one. Roy said proponents of childbirth at home argued from a “theoretical” view and he recalled with some misgivings delivering babies in rural Quebec areas. “As for doctors of my generation,” he said, “this is an unacceptable regression. Thinking of all the chances I then took gives’ me the shivers. “The corporation, therefore, considers it imperative that the benefits progressively gained in the last decades be not placed at Roy’s advice runs contrary to Quebec Social Affairs Minister Denis Lazure who earlier this week said pregnancy should not be treated as an iliness nor become the exclusive domain of doctors. Roy conceded that technological innovations have created artificial en- Women’s forum meets On Tuesday, November 11, at 7:00 p.m. in the Gallery Room, Guppy’'s Original Seafood Res- taurant, 148 East 2nd Street, North Vancouver, is holding the second in a series of Women’s Forum Dinners. He suggested that obstetric departments be more “humanized” to ensure meeting adequate “psychological,” emotional and biological needs.” In recommendations to the government, doctors and mothers, Roy cautioned against “excess. profes- sionalism” to minimize tension and urged that home childbirths should be con- sidered an “‘exeptional measure.” But he said clinical programs to deliver new- borns at home were not practical in Quebec because of the province’s severe climate and low density population.
