Dear Editor: T have at last found a place to live after a solid (by brain and foot!) month's search for a suite, apartment, duplex or house on the North Shore, either alone with the two children (ages 3 and almost 2) or sharing with a friend (woman) and her child (2). | say this to show how flexible we were in all but leases and money. Yet I offered up to $350 for a two-bedroomed place and $600 for a 3-4 bedroomed home. AX6-Wednesday, February 6 1989. - Prejudice against chile It seems oud to me that i in the Year of the Child (and so very soon after) that we found the prejudice to be not against women (my singles sister had the pick of places), nor colour, even sexual bias, but, quite simply and effec- tively, against children. For the most part we were turn- ed right away — “no chidren”; even “no pests or pets” from a few humorists. Where we were “allowed” it was'“one child per room” — condo strata rules! And where there was no restric- ren _ ting clause we were the ones NOT selected (and I think I'm responsible and nice). The building and the “quiet” were all important and while thi’s ‘ is understandable, it seems odd that this is the North Shore norm. Is having children to be considered a disfigurement? How odd, how hypocritical and how sad (we were all children once). , Parent (Name Supplied) North Vancouver Unions right to back NDP Dear Editor: Not so long ago a letter appeared in your pages with a scathing attack on Unions for their support of the NDP. This ridiculing of the most progressive element in the community is naturally unfounded. The _ labour movement for years has protected jobs and backed people for public office at all levels of government who see social issues — jobs, aousing and minority rights -—- as the main problems of society. Some politicians wrongly »lame those who are out of vork for their own unem- sloyment. In fact it has been a succession of governments which have refused to develop an industrial strategy and have adopted poor sconomic policies that has treated the crisis unemploy- ment we have been ex- yeriencing. Every citizen has a right to a comfortable, reasonably griced home. This is too drecious a right to be left to the mercy of arbitrary szandlords who are merely ‘aterested = in dersonal gains. Short of adopting socialism, the best that can Xe done is to attempt to curb, through government, he worst excesses of the Monopoly-dominated hous- ng industry. Unions, the NDP and other progressives in the -ommunity have been in- ‘olved with minority groups. The purpose of organizing ninority groups is to romote a general interest in dl forms of social welfare.
