All Out-of-date drugs ison you can p Prescription drugs that had been in homes for as long as 28 years—a poten- tially dangerous situation— were turned in for destruc- tion as a result of last fall’s poison prevention campaign. However, Health Minister Bob McClelland said last week: ‘‘Poison Prevention Program °78’’ did not yield as many old prescriptions as he would have liked. But he added: ‘‘We made a start in warning the public of the risks of keeping old unused medications in their homes.”* Organized by the College of Pharmacists in co- operation with the B.C. Drug and Poison Information Centre and the Ministry of Health, the campaign was assisted by about 400 pharmacies throughout the province. People were invited to return their old prescriptions, and = leave them in cannisters in which they were incinerated. As an additional incentive, the campaign included a draw on a Mexican holiday for two. The minister said one of the most‘disturbing pieces of data gleaned from the campaign was that only 20 per cent of the returned prescriptions were sedatives, tranquillizers or hypnotics. “This is a low return rate because more than 50 per cent of the poisonings treated in B.C.’s_ hospitals are caused by drugs in that group,’’ he commented. .
