Plans for redesigning West Vancouver’s public safety building on Marine Drive are hanging five until the provin- cial government decides what court functions will stay in the municipality. Municipal manager Terry Lester told council Monday it is uncertain whether only some court functions like traffic and criminal cases, or all court functions, including family court, will stay in the municipality. The provincial government had planned to shift some or all of those functions to a plans still stalled regional courthouse in the City of North Vancouver. After determining what court functions stay, “Lester said, the municipality would like the provincial gover- ment to sign a five or 10-year lease on space in the expanded public safety buidling. = The municipality has not considered actommadating the entire regional court- house, Lester said. ‘‘l am not aware of any sites’’ avail- able, unless the proyincial government buys space already commercially zoned and occupied. ith has been mentioned that if land could not be pur- ‘chased in North Vancouver ‘for the proposed North Shore regional courthouse, possible school closures in West Vancouver would provide alternative sites. However, John Cassey, secretary-treasurer for the West Vancouver Board, said any school closures are ‘‘down the road”’ and he is not aware of any requests from the provincial government to obtain school property for a courthouse site. ‘Government should encourage volunteerism’ FROM PAGE 1 considers the services and materials donated.
