Rosalind Aylmer, a textile artist from: North Vancouver, spent tvo years. putting together the show as chair of the organizing committee. It would have. started last week at the Roundhouse Agee Centre in Vancouver, but a strike by . “Vancouver city workers has closed the centre. Now into its third week, the dispute shows no signs of _ being settled. Aylmer says the show will go on — she just isn’t sure when. A number of workshops will go ahead at alternative venues, and a featured speaker, Dr. Skye Morrison, will give x presentation at the University Womin’s Club, 1489° McRae in Vancouver, at 7 p.m. on Oct. 26. Morrison will speak about the © work of women in Bihar, India, who stitch the sto- ries of their lives into their cloths. - The show looks at the origin of techniques used in all kinds of textile art, including tapestry, weaving, rug hooking, quilting, lace- -making and knitting. ’ In one of Aylmer’s pieces that would have been exhibited, screen-printed fish swim across a swath of . cotton. Images of starving people, digitally printed on silk, are set among the fish. The connection, she says, is that both need clean. water. She uses a piece of Indian fabric, also screen _ paned to show. the origin of a 3. 00-year-old process. “That’s what we're trying to show, is these are the roots, this is where we're taking them,” she said. “We're using traditional techniques to achieve cur © ~ own ends.’ : .
