(Or perhaps they nevee Move out in the first place.) Home is where you then wonder how to balance your own personal and financial “needs with those of your kids ~ — asin, typically: “Now » we just can’t afford those _ extras, or to retire as original- lv planned.” Invariably, heart wins out ‘over head, but not without © considerable discomfort and often conflict. Most of the people I have met who are helping support > their adult children — even if the kids aren’t living at home — resist any suggestion thev cut back. we id try not to be judgmen- tal. “Here’s what it will mean te your financial situation if vou continue to spend this money on vour Kid'si” Tsay. “Only vou can decide whether helping vour adult child(ren) is more important than helping improve vour own finances.” Every situation is differ- ent. Some students simply stay at home after they finish school becsuse it’s the easiest — and cheapest —- thing to do. Others leave but come back because a job or rela- donship goes bad. And it’s a matter of more than money. They want to be treated as adults but continue to enjoy alf the benefits they had as children. That can cause frequent contlict — or suppressed anger if the par- ents in particular try to avoid conflict. I encourage parents to get the matter out into the open, with the help of an indepen- dent third party if necessary. Look into the “tough love” philosophy. @ Lay out in writing how much the parent(s) will spend each month because the kids are still at home —and what effect thar will have on objec- tives like retirement plans, for example, @ Propose several different ways to case both the person: al and financial stress. Nintendo's Gamecube will launch in Japan in July of 2001 and in North America that October.
