Qe NORTH SHORE Van CREDIT UNION Dear Editor: After reading the (Sept. 17) article about the segregated class for native children duc to their low wraduation rate, I was disgusted. They have as much chance to graduate as other children, and as much chance to use the computers meant for the entire school. I suppose next the front area of buses will be reserved tor natives, because of thei low ridership. Or perhaps they'll have their own checkout tine at Sateway, because they don't shop there often enough. Or their own washrooms, north shore news MAIL Box _ acism reversed or drinking fountains. This sounds suspiciously like the segregation of African- Americans in the *50s and "60s in America, doesn’t it? Ata time when students are overwhelming our schools, with over 30 students to a class, and our computer labs— which already have over 29 children per computer in my school — is it really efficient to make a classroom with cniy 11 chil- dren, and their own compat- ers? Just because of their skin colour and heritage? ‘This is the very definition of racism. I know that natives have had crimes committed against them in the past, but have 7 ever done anything to them? No. So why should | be forced to endure even larger class sizes and fewer computers just so they can get special treatment? If natives desire equal rights, why not give them equal rights, instead of this facade of equality currently being shaved down our throats. They pay less tax, get more services and still want more, and [ve had enough. Racism works both ways. Graeme Parker North Vancouver chestyl@hotmail.com Advocating inclusiveness Dear Editor: Re: Class for natives ques- tioned (Sept. 17, North Shore News). When I read the above- mentioned article [ momentar- ily thought 1} had to be in South Africa. It is hard to believe that we are now accept- ing racism providing it has been sanctioned by our bureaucrats. To take a group of 11 chil- dren based on race and give them special privileges invites racism and hatred. If indeed there are only six of 300 natives graduating trom high school (as the article states) the problem would surely be too great to be solved by hand- picking a few students, giving them one teacher and comput- ers of their own. It is sad to see that other children in the school have become second- class citizens, and can only use these computers (provided by taxpayers) outside of the regu- lar classroom hours. The school is where we should be promoting inclusive- ness and that everyone is born with equal rights. If chere are special privileges to be had they should be based on the students needs, not their race. Janice Morton North Vancouver Thanks for crosswalk article Dear Editor: Congratulations to the North Shore News on the great public service it provid- ed when on April 11 it ran an article entitled “North Van crosswalks at crossroads” reported by Martin Millerchip. It also provided a valuable opportunity for oth- ers who were interviewed and expressed a similar desire to introduce a program to North Vancouver. As a result a new school safety patrol program has begun in North Vancouver with a pilot project intro- duced at Upper Lynn elemen- tary school on Sept. 8. T am encouraged by the response of everyone involved in this worthwhile program and my hat goes oi to your fine newspaper which has played an important role in inging us all together. Phibbs Vancouver Driven to 4 a distraction Dear Editor: After reading. Shawn (sie) Conlin’s “advice” to pedestri- ans, how could any thoughtful person not respond to such an asinine article (Don’t get crossed up ots crosswalks, Sept. 17 News)? Alchough some of his comments are rea- sonable, his arrogant and insolent reprobation — of “brain-dead pedestrians” is bound to enrage many pere- grinators who are wary of being bullied by aggressive, impatient, __ self-important motorists. Mr. Conlin seems to think (or should I say believe, doubting that any process involving thought was actually invoked) that pedestrians 1 who do sot automatically sudmic to raaniacal motorists deserve to be run down, as they scem- ingly fail to comprehend the “needs of vehicular traffic.” The gentleman points out that “sauntering/bolting: brain-dead-pedestrian(s), and their “ selfish actions (crossing the strect} have repercussions” for more than just the poor driver trying to clear the inter- section, One is almost driven to tears imagining such a scene. Is this simply trashy com- mentary masquerading as advice? Is it incendiar: rhetoric and a hateful attac toward pedestrians? Is it tongue-in-cherk humour? Or is it merely what read- ers can expect when journal- ists are replaced by testos- terone-pumped Neanderthals desperate for an outlet and an casy target?
