Two teens robbed
by youths in mali

SIX YOUTHS surrounded two 15-year-old boys on Jan. 14 in
Capilano Mall, forcing the boys to hand over a jacket, sweater
and two posters they had bought.

Police said the robbers included five boys and one girl. The
victims declined a demand to go outside with the group and
handed over their possessions fearing they would be hurt,
according te a North Vancouver RCMP spokesman.

The apparent group leader is described as being a Native
male, age 16, 1.8 m (5710) with a medium build. He was
wearing a black hat and a black Adidas jacket with three
white stripes on the arms, He was also carrying a blue sports
bag. Anyone with information concerning the suspects, can
call the North Vancouver RCMP at 985-1311.

Laundry store
fire investigated

THE NORTH Vancouver RCMP are investigating an
apparent arson at the Blue Lagoon Laundry and Linen
Supply store on Jan. 8 at 1053 Marine Dr.

Police and fire department officials believe the fire was
intentionally set in a shelf unit in the back of the business.
The building also houses the Blue Lagoon Barber Stylist
for Men. Police say firefighters were able to quickly douse
the 8 a.m. blaze. The back of the business sustained sub-
stantial smoke and water damage, according te police.

The North Vancouver RCMP are still investigating.

A quickly growing community
on West Vancouver's west side cou-
pled with the uncertain future of
Eagle Harbour community centre
has united area locals to fight for a
bigger and better facility. A new
recreation facility has been an issue
for more than five years. but has
become a priority because West
Vancouver School District 45 plans
to reclaim the leased Eagle Harbour
land by July 1997.

Many residents are concerned
about the slow process to find and
develop a new facility.

“What sort or assurance do we
have that there will be a facility to go
to?” said John Clarke. a member of
Western .Community Services
Society who chaired the meeting.

Mavor Mark Sager said deter-
mining a location for the new facili-
ty was responsible in part for the
project’s delay. Lust year, West
Vancouver District designated land
formerly owned by BC Rail for a
recreation facility but no plans were
established to develop the property.
The site across from Gleneagles
golf course was purchased for $4.8
million.

But Sager responded: “Anyone
who lives in North Vancouver prob-

The new Gleneagles-area site
covers 27 ucres und is considered an
ideal location to serve communities
from Caulfeild to Lions Bay.
Preliminary plans estimate the new
facility would be about 30,000
square feet (2,787 sq. m) and cost
about $6 million.

Pike is scheduled to submit a
master plan on West Vancouver
recreation facilities to council in
July. If the project is approved,
financing will come from the inter-
est on the district's $19 million
endowment fund und a capital facil-
ity fund.
