Bats get rid of harmful pests

BATS ARE among the most iis-
understood animals. Contrary to
popular belief, they do not carry
the rabies virus und they are not
blind.

Although they look like flying
mice, bats aren’! codents, In fact,
some of them may be related to
primates. They are the only mam-
nals that have wings and that fly.

There are nearly 1,000 species
of bats, and they live on every con-
tinent except Antarctica.

Since buts cat a lot of insects,
including mosquitos, Mies, moths
and beetles, they are great lo have

around your garden, collage, or
campsite, In fact, some bats can
gobble up ta 600 mosquitoes in an
hour,

So, if you want to get rid of
annoying insects, try a completely
natural form of pest control —

attract bats to your area by build-

ing 4 bat house.

And if you do, here are some
tips (o keep in mind:

Make the house out of soft
wood and give it a nitrrow open-
ing.
fa Put your bat house where there
are lots of insects, The best places

are wood Jots, the edges of forests,
meadows, valleys, marshes, rivers
and ponds.
Wi Install the bat house four to five
metres from the ground in a sunny
yet well-protected place.
@ Keep the bat house in the same
location for two seasons, If it
remains unoccupied, try moving it.
