The report, prepared by the
engineering firm of Phillips
Barnett, projected traffic and
population figures for the year
1986, and found that it was “of

“a road connecting the Second
Narrows Bridge. and ‘West Van-
couver be established,

According to North Vancouver
‘planning engineer . Zoltan Kuun,
the congestion’ on Marine Drive
wil! create unacceptable conditions
on other roads in North Van-
couver.

_“It is hard:to say how long we

said. Kuun, a consultant for the
Nerth Vancouver Chamber of

designed for commuter traffic.
“The straw that will-break the
camel's back will be the backlash
from merchants on Welch who see

their business plummet because of

the traffic snarl on Welch, a street
that was designed for commercial
use only,” said Kuun. .

The-Chamber of Commerce has
deemed a lower level road a major
priority.

“A lower level road will hap-
pen, but in what form exactly,
that is unknown,’’ Kuun added.
He has suggested to the chamber
that the best, and most feasible,
way to build the road is in stages.

As Kuun sees it, the most criti-
cal issue is the impact the road
will have on the native-owned
land that is essential.for the route.
He said some form of land ex-
change would be the most appeal-
ing way to satisfy both Sides. --

Detailed plans for a lower level
road are sitting in the North Van-
couver City engineering depart-
ment, so costs of surveying and
planning would be minimal.

All that is needed is the political
will to start the phasing in of pro-.
jects that will one day serve as a
more convenient, and quicker,
route across the North Shore.
