“Motorists petition protests transit levy

OVER 6,180 British Columbians
have signed a petition pui for-
ward by the BC Automobile
Association, to protest the pro-
posed implementation of the taa
on motorists in order to pay BC
Transit's deficit.

The additional levy of $48 per
motorist, per year, has been
proposed by the Vancouver
Regional Transit Commission.

“Motorists contribute $320
million annually to generat reve-

nue rough provincial gasoline
tax. In addition, motorists in the
Lower Mainland pay three cents
per litre transit tax on gasoline,”
said Leigh Carter, BCAA's
Director of Public Affairs. ‘“‘We
are already putting millions of
dollars into the system, and put-
ting yet another tax on motoring
to try to whittle down BC Tran-
sit's deficit is not an effective
way of solving complex urban
transportation problems.””
