Tae Kwon Do team takes 24 trophies THE ‘NORTH Shore ‘Tae Kwon Do Centre is. becom- ing a force to be reckoned with in B.C. and the Amer- ican Pacific Northwest. Fifteen members of the club who ‘competed recently in the American Tae Kwon Do Regional Championships held in Arlington, Washington, brought home a total of 24 trophies. - This was the most trophies won by . -any. club. taking part in the competition. ‘The martial artists competed in divisions based on age and belt rank. Competitions ranged. from white belt children all the way up to the black belt VIP category, which is for competitors 32 years and older. Inthe forms competition, the - following people won trophies in their divisions: First: Lisa Zine, Audrey Yap and Phil Tutt. Second: Glen . Olson, Adelberg and Thompson Tai. Sean Third: Terry Peters, Warren Schopp, David Sandberg and Gerry Sandberg. In sparring competition, Tutt, Schopp: and Yap placed ‘first, while -Zinc, Adelberg, Stewart Howard and Brian Sandberg were second-place winners’: Gerry. Sandberg, Olson and Peters won :third place. In -board-breaking, Adelberg won first, Yap placed second and Dave Kisteman took third. In one-steps competition, David - Sandberg placed second. - This outstanding performance by the North Shore club builds’ on an already impressive list of wins this year. BC. athletes heading for Spain NORTH VANCOUVER’S Charmaine Crooks is one of nine B.C. athletes to make the. Olympic Track and Field.team. Crooks was already pre-selected to join the Olympic, team and qualified in the 400m, 800m and 4x400 relay during Clympic trials in Montreal in’ mid-June. Other B.C.’ athletes who will be going to Barcelona include Graham Fell (3,000m), Paul Williams (10,000m), Debbie Bowker (1,500m), Angela Chalmers (1,500m, 3,000m), Robyn Meagher (3,000m), Peter ° Noel Eads Ogilvie (200m), Camille (4x400m relay) and Leah (3,000m). Members North from the Shore’s NorWesters Track and Field Club did not make the Olympic team, but James Leishman, Kurt Heywood and Erica Forster put in good perfor- mances. . Leishman came in fifth in a 400m hurdles heat after being in- terfered with by another athlete who hit a hurdle. Leishman’s time . was 55.96, more than two seconds slower than his B.C. high school record-breaking time of $3.49 for 400m hurdles. _ . Heywood placed second with a pole vault jump.of 5.20 to equal his personal best, but the Olympic standard was 5.50. Forster placed fifth in triple Wednesday, July 8, 1992 — North Shore News - 15 Little League Royals defeat Eyford ROGERS ROYALS cap- tured the North Vancouver Central Little League playoff championship trophy June 23 at Chris Zuehlke Park. The Royals also won the division trophy with a 20-1 record. The .only team to defeat the Royals was former two-time champions Eyford Construction, who ended up in third place this year and played the Royals for the championship. The final score of the final game was Royals 8, Eyford 5. The coach for the Royals was Will Paddock and the assistant coach was Rob Smith. From July #1, the District Five playoffs are being held at Chris Zuehlke Park at 17th Street and Jones Avenue in North Van- couver. There are eight teams in the tournament: North Van Cen- tral, West .Vancouver, Lynn Valley, Highlands, Howe Sound, Cypress Park, Mount Seymour and Forest Hills. : The winner advances to the provincial finals.
