Women’s netball league play starts on the weekend THE NORTH Shore Capilano Women’s Netball Club opened another netball season fast weekend with the Opening Season Tournament held in the tennis bubble at the Delta Town and Country Inn. The winner of the A division was Pleiades coached by Ann Willocks. B division winner was Surrey's Cosmos team. Capilano came eighth in the B division. Teams from around the Lower Mainland played in a round robin tournament for the Mitre Trophy. League games will begin on Sept. 28, Netball is played in the B.C. Winter Games and !ast season Capilano challenged the Checkers Netball Club for the zone finals. While unsuccessful on that oc- casion, this season Capilano are aiming to defeat Checkers and challenge other teams from around the province in next year’s Winter Games to be held in Ver- non, Playing in the opening-season tournament were several members of the highly-successful Canadian Netball Team, which finished sixth in the recent world champi- onships held in Sydney, Australia. Coached by Willcocks of West Vancouver, the teain outshone themselves by finishing a surpris- ing sixth and qualified for the World Games to be heid in The Hague in 1993, As a result of their success “Down Under’? the Canadian team kas been invited to paz- Ucipate in the opening ceremonies for the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, England, Oct. 5-6. They will play a test match against the English Nationa! team which finished fourth in Sydney. Netball is chiefly played by mil- lions of women around the world, but men are fast discovering the challenging game. Netball is played by two teams of seven players who have strictly defined areas of play. While only two members of cach team may attempt to score a goal, all players have an equal part to play both in defending and attacking. Netball involves a variety of passes from one team member to another, so that u goal may be scored from within the goal circle by shooting the ball into a ring 10 feet off the ground atuached to a free-standing post. Capilano Women’s Netball Club is seeking new members and invites prospective players to at- tend the course held at Delbrook Gym on Tuesdays 8-10 p.m. to learn more.
