An Independent Retailer lighting the first candle on the traditional candelabrurn called a menorah. The eight-day festival dates back to 165 B.C. when Judah Macabbee and his followers gain- ed victory over their Syrian op- pressors. After driving the Syrians out of Jerusalem, the Jews set about cleaning and rededicating their holy temple which had been defiled by the Hellenists. As the story goes, when they wanted to light a sacred lamp, there was no ritually prepared oil to be found. They discovered one small container of oil, enough to last only one day. But when the lamp was lit it miraculously burned for eight days. Jews celebrate this miracle by flighting candles in the home for eight days. In the home a special prayer is recited, followed by songs and a traditional game of dreidel, using a four-winged spinning top. Also, traditional foods are eaten such as latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts) both fried with oil as a reminder of the miracle of the oil in the temple. Hanukkah Hanukkah lights have come ta symboiize a universal message of freedom of the human spirit, freedom from tyranny and op- pression, and the ultimate victory of good over evil. The menorah, or eight-branched = candelabrum, serves to remind all people to rededicate their lives to goodness and spirituality, and urges all citi- zens of the world to reflect on the miracles of creation and life.
