By PATRICK RAYNARD Contributing Writer “An extraordinary teacher and librarian’’ is how Ridgeway principal Bernie Wells described Heath to the North Vancouver School Board. “Mr. Heath’s interpretation of technology and the media has been brilliant,"’ Wells said. ‘‘He encourages the students to think and stimulates their creativity.”” Wells told the trustees that the quality of Ridgeway library’s collection was inconsistent when Heath took over, with books dating as far back as 1897 and one book on Africa bearing a 1908 copyright. “But, three years ago, something happened,”’ Wells said, giving a favorite example of wher®Heath played Antonio Vivaldi’s Seasons while showing slides of leaves changing through the year. > District 44 superintendent Dr. Robin Brayne told the board that Heath ‘‘was recognized for his role of transforming the Ridgeway Resource Centre from one that relied mainly on print material to one rich ir all THE END OF MAY IS THE END OF OUR LANCE! Board chairman Kev. Roy Dungey told Heath that “the board cherishes what you have done. All of the trustees and parents of North Vancouver congratulate you very inuch."* The Marshall McLuhan Distinguished Teacher Awards salute teachers for ‘‘creative and innovative applications of communications technologies in the teaching-learning environment,’’ Brayne said. The awards are designed to bring public recognition to individual teachers and, in doing so, to both reward and encourage excellence in the classroom, Brayne added. The awards are the creation of the Marshall McLuhan Centre on Global Communications, which was founded in 1981 by Mary McLuhan, daughter of the late Canadian scholar and futurist. The non-profit centre is based in Tcronto and San Francisco.
