House of Love worth a listen Yes, the pop world loves an enigma. House Of T™ House Of Love, Fontana 1990 Love's all-round creative force, singer-songwriter and guitarist Guy Chadwick knows this. A second untitled album, complete with technicolor butterflies in place of the usual liner notes and lyrics, draws one in like a net. The focus is rewarded in spades by one of the most interesting newish bands to be heard from Britain in a while. Crystalline lyrics... ‘‘In a town where cars are diamonds and hunger is the key, someone's got to love you"... manifest themselves in a sweeping wash of guitar resonance. Reai time crum- bles and drops away. Roger Waters mind-melds with Bono on MICHAEL * BECKER record review the dark side of the Joshua tree. Eno takes Tiger Mountain and Chadwick sops up the residual ambience to forge a synthesis marked by an unexpected majes- ty. Just how the subtle dynamics of the House Of Love sound translates live on stage is the musical question of the month. We'll find out Saturday, June 9 at the Town Pump. As the man says, “The time is right to celebrate or die.”’ The Who — Join Together, MCA 1990 The 1989, 25th anniversary cash-in tour afforded the grizzled rockers @ tremendous opportunity to coast. But the legendary fellows proved their tunes have both stay- ing power and relevance. The skimpy booklet included with the bow set might have heen improved by the inclusion of reflective words from the band or a considered essay putting The Who phenomenon in context for a generation of tans who have Cocked tess than a quater con: tury. tnevitably the music speaks for itself. An elegant run-through of the milestone rock opera Tommy accounts for half of the set. The rest is a well-paced mix of Who classics and Who versions of solo outings. Pete Townsend's muse is shown to best aclvantage on Iron Man’s Dig and the Empty Glass vintage Rough Boys. Join Together never comes close to generating the unbridled mayhem captured on the Live At Leeds album. This one’s about big band rock — a brass section here, backup vocals there, a drummer plus a percussionist in place of the irreplaceable Keith Moon. The image of Townsend, half deaf, hand-bandaged and wind- milling it away on electric guitar in B.C. Place Stadium last year is the stuff of legend. Ultimately Join Together confirms that moment. Eric And The Good Good Feeling — Funky, SBK Records 1989 Eric “Good Good Feeling” Robinson covers much ground. The first three tracks on side one build a funky bridge between black permutations of disco and booty shaking hyperfunkadelicacy. Eric has the Prince routine down pat and he also does a mean Little Stevie. Higher Than Heaven chugs along with a solid lower-register piano foundation, pushing the thing on up to higher ground, Green Eyes is downright worship- ful. Lyrically Robinson’s bag is all about good good stutt tike hope and love and self-empowerment. Power remixes and “ultradynamic” video, ‘Cass- ingles” (cassette singles) feed the hype. The Indiana-born Robinson, once singled out in church chow by Bobby Womack, has been a writer for Motowa. He's spun out hits for Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin and Smokey Robinson. He was also responsible for Sylvester's Dunce Disco Heat. 2VZR4 FRIPAY wel 2 <_< Hol. 1DAGS, HOME OF THE FRIDAT BEACH BASH vMner THR] (Gusher) PHONE FOR etki) BEACH EASH /NFORITON.
