Organizer Michael Stewart said the tough course was made more difficult by conditions of soft snow on a steep pitch. Flames keep playoff hopes alive with wins THE NORTH Shore Winter Club Flames pushed into fifth place in West Coast Junior Hockey League standings, squeaking to a 4-3 win over the Northwest Americans at home on Saturday, and then edg- ing out the Steelers in Grandview 3-1 on Sunday. On Saturday the Flames fell behind 2-0 early in the game as Seattle capitalized on two power- play opportunities, scoring at 1:05 and 3:58 of the first period. The Flames replied with a power-play goal as Marcei Desjar- dins connected from Brad Costa at 16:11, and then Dave Atkinson’s screened shot from just inside the blue line evened the score at 2-2 after one, A wrap-around goal by Costa from Wade Bartok and Scott Gor- don accounted for the only scoring of the second period, giving the Flames a 3-2 lead heading into the final frame. Costa notched his second, and game-winning goal of the game, assisted by Rich Haldane and Gordon at 12:09 of the third period. Seattle concluded the scor- ing with a short-handed goal at 18:36 for the 4-3 Flames’ win. Seattle outshot the Flames 35-30 with Gary Knight turning in a solid performance in goal for the home team. At Grandview, the Flames’ re- corded only their second win on the road this season as they nudged by the Steelers 3-1. After a scoreless first period, the two teams traded goals in the se- cond with the Flames opening the scoring at 7:55 on a breakaway goal by Kevin Buhr from Dave Shepard and the Steelers replying just under four minutes later for a 1-1 tie after two. Just over two minutes into the third period, Desjardins notched what proved to be the game win- Ner, scoring on the power play from Costa and Bartok, and then at 4:54 Gordon added the in- surance marker and closed out the scoring in the game. Kevin Radbourne was sharp in net for the Flames, turning aside forty shots while Flame shooters fired 42 shots at his counterpart. Saturday’s game with Seattle was telecast by Shaw Cable and will be seen today (Feb. 28) at 9 p.m., and tomorrow at 8 p.m. The Flames play theiz two re- maining games in regular season play this week to determine their position in the quarter-final playoff series scheduled to begin March 5S. ; ; ; " - Photo submitted SUSIE MARES of North Vancouver recently added several medals and the Cavendish Cup junior title to her cache of trophies. Mares skis to Cavendish Cup victory NORTH VANCOUVER’S Susie Mares won the overall Junior Canadian Award at the Caven- dish Cup series in Quebec earlier this month. The 16-year-old racer snagged the overall junior ‘‘B’’ title and a $650 purse after adding her 16th overall Mont Garceau finish to her accumulated points in the Canadian Alpine Series finals. Mares’ title was calculated from finishes over the whole Western Canadian race series finals in Lake Louise, Red Deer and Nakiska. A member of the Blackcomb Ski Club, Mares is ranked second overall in B.C. with event- specific rankings of second in GS, fourth in slalom and fifth in super G. A grade Ii correspondence student, Mares travelled to Lake Louise to race in downhill and super G after winning the junior title.
