MaiLBox 7 - Sunday, January 14, 1990 - North Shore News Resident laments erosion of health services Dear Editor: It_ has been quite evident for some time now that there is a well organized, steady erosion by gov- ernments of many of the health Christmas Bureau says thanks OPEN LETTER TO NORTH SHORE CITIZENS On behalf of all the people that the North Vancouver Christmas Bureau served this year and its many volunteers, we sincerely thank you for your continued sup- services we have grown to value over the years. Recently | became aware of what I take to be the final insult. Lions Gate Hospital has for joined with many service clubs, churches, businesses and individual families to help us reach our goal. We served everyone that was recommended to us by our social! service agencies. We thank everyone for their some years conducted a cardiac tehabilitation class to which pa- tients who have recovered from life threatening heart conditions have graduated after release from hos- time, thoughtfulness and effort and truly wish all of our citizens a healthy, happy and prosperous year to come. Pat Orr, chairperson North Vancouver Christmas Bureau pital care. Only someone who has experi- enced the benefits of this program on the way back into the mainstream can really appreciate how valuable and necessary it is. Until this year this program was free of charge but often supported by donations by members. Imagine my consternation when [ learned that Lions Gate is now charging $100 for three months or $400 per year for this program. Their reason is that there have been government cutbacks resulting in the cutting back of cer- tain budgets withia the hospital. Let us try to draw a parallei with the fees charged by Delbrook Rec- reation Centre for their cardiac ex- ercise class which meets three times per week and is more advanced. Members pay $110 per season for seniors or $165 for regular. In the face of this, how can Lions Gate possibly justify their fee of $400 for the season? This whole thing pivots back again to both the federal and pro- vincial governments turning the screws tighter and tighter C.F. Vagg North Vancouver port and help. Party alive, kicking Dear Editor: In your Dec. 20 edition, the In- quiring Reporter column asked about a viable third party in B.C. The lead remarks seemed to sug- gest that the Liberal Party of B.C. was to be equated with the Green Party and even ‘“‘splinter groups.” The Liberal Party in this pro- vince is very active, with an energetic and thoughtful leader, Gordon Wilson. Admittedly the party lacks elected representation in Victoria, but we are and will be working very hard to fill that void in the next provincial general election. For your information, the foun- ding meetings for the new North Shore Liberal Associations will be held on Jan. 17 at the Delbrook Community Centre. You can be assured that Liberals will be heard from more and more, both locally and provincially. Jeremy Dalton North Vancouver Kenneth J.
