His hotel is at the western end of the Crinan Canal, an attractive transit that opens up the isles to-yachts and powerboats from Clyde ports such as Largs and Troon. Says Ryan, whose hotel has its own fishing boat bringing daily seafood catches to the restaurant: “The secret of. these glorious waters is coming to an end. We are going to have to share this paradise . with a few more people.”* One man intent on doing this is Tony Binns, chairman of Hebri- dean Island Cruises, whose vessel, Scottish trip. the Hebridean Princess, has started @ new career as a miniature luxury liner in the Western Isles. Formerly the Caledonian Mac- Bryne ferry Columbia with a pas- senger capacity of up to 600, the Hebridean Princess has had a $3 million refit allowing for just 48 passengers in 23 staterooms. Two have private balconies. The 220-ft.-long, 1,420 ton vessel is based in Oban for a sum- mer-long program of three to seven-night cruises to famous names such as St. Kilda, Colonsay, | Tiree, Stornoway, Rhum, Eigg, Harris, Mull, Jura, Skye and Ar- ran. Cars can be carried on board. Sailing, fishing and clay pigeon shooting are included in the fares, which for a seven-day cruise range from U.S. $850 to $2,790. Binns says the vessel has been elegantly furnished and the one- sitting meals will feature new menus every day with fresh, Scot- tish nouvelle cuisine and barbecues on deck. She joins a fleet of 30 ferries serving 23 islands in the Firth of Clyde and Western Isles, which last year carried more than five million passengers and more than one million cars.
