graduate has won a number of
competitions and in 1986 was the
Canadian Juvenile Heavyweight
gold medalist.

This silver medal win marks a
comeback for De Ath, who was
sidelined from national competi-
tion last vear with an ankle injury.

MacFarlane is now training for
endurance horse racing's World
Sup after she became the first
Canadian to complete the tough
Puiina Endurance Race of Cham-
pions in Sedalia, Colo., recently.

Ridi:.g 13-year-old Arabian
gelding Sir Prize, MacFarlane
completed the 100-mile moun-
tainous race in 1634 hours, earn-
ing her a 38th finishing in a field
of 99 starters.

“It was a fabulous sense of ac-
complishment,’’ said MacFarlane,
34, who only started endurance
riding last year and marked this
event as her first 100-mile ride.
“It was absolutely wonderful.”’

In getting ready for the World
Cup event Sept. 24 in Virginia,
“It’s just something you really
have to psych yourself up for and
make sure you're well prepared.

“It’s a long day out there — it
can be quite a drain.”*

Cameron of Maple Ridge rode
15-year-old Appaloosa mare
Navajo’s Natty Glo to complete
the race in 18 hours, finishing in
50th place.

With a large following in Europe
and Australia/New Zealand, the
100-mile endurance ride is ex-
pected to become a demonstration
sport at the 1992 or 1996 Olym-
pics.
