Douc COLLINS YOUR MAN Doug has been called a few names in his time. When [ was an inmate of Stalag VINB, the German guards would point at me and say “Choorchill,"’ on ac- count of my pudding-like features. Readers of this newspa- per will be aware of other, less complimentary descriptions. But it has taken a reader of The Elder Statesmitn, the seniors’ paper, to top the lot. I scribble for the Statesman, and recently did a piece for it on the Ernst Zundel case in which | pointed out that the prosecution or persecution of Zundel was a disgrace, a waste of public moncy, and a threat to freedom of speech. The response couldn't have been more furious if | had suggested the Queen was a lush. Cancellations proliferated, and one kind soul said | should be made to clean the streets of Vancouver with my tongue. N. o doubt a lot of Jews: couldn’ t care less what * Zundel ‘says. But one, doesn’t hear from.. them. The presstire. groups, however, have made the . Holocaust into an sindustry.’’ But the letter / liked best claim- ed I must have licen in the pay of the Nazis during those fun days in the Stalag. Otherwise, said the writer, Madeleine Phillips of Langley, they would have knocked me off when they had the chance. You think I’m kidding, or that Miss Phillips, bless her happy heart, was writing tongue-in-cheek a bit? Not so. Here is her letter, in part, as published: ". You should immediately remove Doug Collins from your paper! “Tread his biography and I tru- ly believe he was in the pay of the Nazis! He escaped five or six times and never seemed to be penalized. - Other escapees were killed or made - . to pay terribly for the escape at- tempts... “People like him are like poison pen writers who are ug!y and dan- . -Berous.”” "Yeah, something funny must have been going on in the old ” Stalag. Not only was the place bet- ter than Club Med for blokes like’ me, but I have even heard that Adolf summoned me to the Wilhelmstrasse and'decorated me with the Iron Cross, First Class. But | digress. Some people, among whom we must number Miss Phillips, will never understand that the law under which Zundel was charged for “spreading false news" is an abomination, and that the Nazis in Germany and the Fascists in Italy had similar laws. They do not seem ta know, cither, that the media have caved in to pressure from Jewish groups and in effect agreed not to report the second trial, which is now in progress. That's why you haven't heard much about it. Imagine the fuss there would be if the Pope had organized a black- out on a trial — any trial — because Catholics didn’t like the coverage it generated. No doubt a lot of Jews couldn't 4 eare, less what Zundel says. But fone doesn’ thear from them. The pressure groups, however, have » made the Holocaust into an in- _, dustry. So much s0 that today, “ getting on for 50 years after the event, it is on the news nightly. * Zundel claims that the Holocaust was a hoax. The number who died, he says, was nothing like 6,000,000, Well, | am inclined to doubt the figure too, if only because it is six tines as big as the number of British and Empire casualties in the whole of the slaughter of the First World War, Does that make mea federal case, too? Whether the figure is true or false is beside the point. What is not beside the point is that a pressure group could bring about a trial of this kind on the basis of an obscure law, and that it could en- sure a second trial takes place at enormous public expense. This even though the first trial was loaded against the accused and declared to be a mistrial. Jt is also significant that media outlets like the Toronto Star, the Globe and Mail, the CBC and CTV can be persuaded to play down or otherwise ignore the trial on the grounds that Zundel is a liar, and that what he has to say is harmful to Jewish interests. What does that say about jour- -nalism in Canada? Well, there you have it. And thank you for unmasking ine, Miss Phillips. Drop around some time and see my Iron Cross. P.S. Harvey Wood, the West Van- couver Special Education Parents Group representative, said these children require moncy to meet needs created by the organization of the new junior school and to improve current services. The district now has a centre for special needs children at West Vancouver Secondary School but will have to set up a second one to meet the needs of children in grades 7-10 at the mew junior Hillside School, Wood said. “Tf you are a special needs child, you are told every day in one way or another that you're a failure," a parent told the committee. Kreiger said that among the Lower Mainland's 11° school districts, West Vancouver had the sixth highest ratio, and that within the province it had the — six- ty-seventh highest ratio.
