‘REGULAR’ DONORS BECOMING INELIGIBLE

RECRUITING NEW blood
donors is a major challenge facing
the Red Cross. Many blood donors
are growing older and becoming
ineligible, and their places are not
being filled by young people.

“Only four per cent of the pop-
ulation donates blood on a regular
basis,’’ said Rick O’Brien, director
of public relations for the Red
Cross’s B.C.-Yukon Division.

“These ‘regulars’ have been
supporting the rest of the popula-
tion for years."’

Today, one unit of blood can
help as many as four people in
need. At least 20 units are required
for each open-heart surgery pa-
tient; cancer patients undergoing
chemotherapy often need 50 units
or more; a serious burn victim may
receive as many as 200 units of
blood during the long healing pro-

the Yukon. In order to provide
these hospitals with the required
blood supplies, 600 blood donors a
