Many blood donors are growing older and becoming ineligible, and their places are not being filled by young people. “Only four per cent of the pop- ulation donates blood on a regular basis,’’ said Rick O’Brien, director of public relations for the Red Cross’s B.C.-Yukon Division. “These ‘regulars’ have been supporting the rest of the popula- tion for years."’ Today, one unit of blood can help as many as four people in need. In order to provide these hospitals with the required blood supplies, 600 blood donors a day, five days a weck, are needed.
