we Se me A pee ed et ores P Dear Editor: Currently there is much interest in British Columbia around the Haida and other land claims and the peace issue with walks and conferences in many communities. These two issues are merging together in the problems low level test flights by NATO air forces are causing for the Innu, the native people of Labrador and nor- theastern Quebec. This is par- ticularly of interest in British Col- umbia, in the light of the report on CBC Radio in late March, that a° series. of low level military test flights were to begin in a north- ~ south direction across British Col- umbia, : As a result of increasing com- plaints from the West German public over low flying aircraft, NATO is looking at establishing a Tactical Fighter Weapons Centre Military test flights over B.C. in Labrador or in Turkey. Preliminary tests by the German Luftwaffe and the RAF have since 1979 severely disrupted hunting camps and game migration pat- terns. The jets fly so low as to rip- ple Jakes and cause trees to sway. They have flown directly over fam- ily hunting camps for practice. For example, Penote Apatet Andrew Sheshatshit testified that on September 10, 1984: ‘‘The kids were playing outside the tent at our camp on the shores of Penepuapisknipu. All of a sudden two Luftwaffe Phantom jets flew right over the tent. We could not hear them coming. They were about 200 feet above the ground. The children started to cry. The noise was very loud indeed.’’ The noise, on occasion, can be so loud as to be painful to adults and cause them to fall to the ‘YES’ FOR DISPOSAL SYSTEM Racoons cheer new trash cans Dear Editor: - 1 am writing to you on behalf of the raccoon population in the Blueridge area concerning the new .green garbage cans. ‘Being’ a regular reader of the ‘North Shore News (since it’s usual- | ly: ‘wrapped around the most tasty food in:-the: receptacles) I was prompted to write to you thanking whoever is responsible for fantastic new cans. ‘At first the catch on the cans gave us a little trouble, but before long we had our method perfected. You see, we climb onto the regu- lar garbage cans, undo the catch, lift the lid, and climb right into the can. We then. eat to our: hearts’ content, and when we're done, we “climb back out and replace the lid. Not. only does this save us from knocking over four garbage cans . “to get to the same amount of food, ‘but it.also saves‘you humans: the: ‘trouble ‘of cleaning up the garbage that we: cused to ‘have | fo: “kaock : over. “ Thank . you: for: ‘the ‘Superb. in-. novation and‘ ‘consider the’ rac- coons’ vote for the new disposal system a ‘‘yes’’.
